This Privacy Policy explains how Book Identifier ("we", "our", or "the extension")
collects, uses, and shares information when you use our Chrome extension. We are committed
to protecting your privacy and being fully transparent about our data practices.
1. What Data We Collect
Book Identifier collects only the minimum data necessary to function:
Website Content (Screen Region Image): When you initiate a book lookup
by selecting a region of your screen, that selected area is captured as an image.
This image is sent to our backend server solely to extract the book title or cover
text using AI. The image is processed in real time and is never stored, logged,
or retained after processing.
Device ID: A randomly generated anonymous identifier is created
the first time you use the extension and stored locally in your browser. This ID
is used only for rate limiting (to prevent abuse) and is never linked to your
identity, account, or any personal information.
User Preferences: Your backend URL setting (if customized) is
stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage API. This never leaves
your device except as the destination for API requests.
We do not collect:
Your name, email address, or any personally identifiable information
Your browsing history or the URLs of pages you visit
Your location
Any data from pages you visit beyond the screen region you explicitly select
Authentication credentials or payment information
2. How We Use Your Data
The data we collect is used exclusively for the following purposes:
Book title extraction: The screen region image you select is
sent to our backend and processed by the Anthropic Claude AI API to identify
the book title or author from the image.
Book information retrieval: The extracted title is used to
query third-party book data services to retrieve ratings, genres, plot summary,
and reader reviews.
Rate limiting: Your anonymous device ID is used to enforce
a daily usage limit and prevent abuse of the service.
Important: We do not use your data for advertising, profiling,
analytics beyond basic usage counts, or any purpose other than providing
the book lookup service.
3. Data Sharing — Third Parties
To provide the book lookup service, your screen region image and extracted book
title may be shared with the following third parties:
Anthropic (Claude API): The selected screen region image is
sent to Anthropic's API for AI-based text extraction. Anthropic's privacy
policy applies to this processing.

RapidAPI / Goodreads Data Provider: The extracted book title
is sent to a Goodreads data API via RapidAPI to retrieve ratings and reviews.
No image or personal data is shared with this service.

Searlo Search API: The extracted book title is sent to Searlo
to locate the correct Goodreads book ID. No image or personal data is shared.

We do not sell, rent, or share your data with any other third parties for
marketing, advertising, or any other purpose.
4. Data Retention
Screen region images: Never stored. Discarded immediately
after title extraction.
Book lookup results: Cached in our database to improve
performance for future lookups of the same book. Cached data contains only
book metadata (title, rating, genres, etc.) — never any user-identifying information.
Device ID and preferences: Stored locally in your browser.
Cleared when you uninstall the extension.
5. Data Security
All communication between the extension and our backend server is encrypted
using HTTPS/TLS. We do not store raw images or any sensitive user data on
our servers.
6. Your Rights
Since we do not collect personally identifiable information, there is no
personal data profile to access, correct, or delete. If you wish to reset
your anonymous device ID, you can do so by uninstalling and reinstalling
the extension.
7. Children's Privacy
Book Identifier is not directed at children under the age of 13 and we do
not knowingly collect any data from children.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be
reflected on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the extension
after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
